Historic status needs an official eligibility check. Age alone is not a reason to skip an application or safety requirement.
Follow the official route
The GOV.UK historic vehicles guide separates eligibility, applications and renewal. Follow the sections in order and check the current dates there. This guide does not reproduce a rolling cut-off.
| Question | Official section |
|---|---|
| Does the vehicle qualify? | Eligibility |
| Has it been substantially changed? | Guidance linked from eligibility |
| What application is needed? | Apply for exemption |
| What happens later? | Renewal |
Prepare the evidence
Have vehicle documents and modification history ready. If the build date or changes are unclear, follow the expert routes linked by GOV.UK rather than guessing from a number plate.
GOV.UK states that historic vehicles must still be roadworthy. An exemption does not settle a question about mechanical condition.
Separate storage arrangements
Review SORN independently if the car stays off road. Keep the paperwork alongside the lay-up plan and revisit both before the next journey.
