SORN and storing a car off the road

Find the official DVLA services for a stored vehicle and its return to use.

Storage and notifying DVLA are separate tasks. Use the official service rather than assuming a garage changes the recorded status.

Start with the current service

GOV.UK SORN explains the information required and when notification takes effect. Read the live page for your circumstances instead of relying on an old checklist.

Stage Official guidance
Taking the vehicle off road Make a SORN
Returning to use Vehicle tax
Assessing condition Vehicle safety checks

Keep records together

Save confirmation with the storage notes and list what must be revisited before use. This page does not calculate refunds, reproduce deadlines or decide whether your arrangement qualifies.

SORN does not inspect the vehicle. Keep separate battery, tyre, fluid and maintenance notes. The lay-up planner can organise them.

Before returning to use, review the official requirements and seek inspection if the vehicle's condition is uncertain.
