Garage dehumidifiers: desiccant or compressor?

Compare types using measured temperatures and the exact model instructions.

Record the coldest conditions where the appliance will run. A headline extraction rate is not a sizing recommendation for your building.

Meaco's garage guidance discusses desiccant models for extended colder conditions and larger compressor models for warmer garages. This is guidance about its range, not a universal threshold for every appliance.

Check Why it helps
Minimum overnight temperature Compare with the exact permitted operating range
Extraction test conditions Avoid comparing unlike headline figures
Drain arrangement Confirm hose, fall and frost precautions
Supply and clearances Follow the manual for placement
Water entry An appliance does not repair a leak

Use readings rather than guesses

Try the garage humidity check with your measurements. A model being within its stated temperature range does not prove it can maintain a particular humidity in your garage.

Give the maker your construction, floor area, ventilation and temperature record before choosing. Check what happens after a power interruption and whether continuous drainage is suitable.

Review performance

Continue logging conditions after installation. Inspect the tank, filter and drain as directed. If readings fail to improve, investigate setup and moisture entry before buying another unit.
